Celebrating Park(ing) Day in Newark, NJ

Occasionally, team members at UQ get involved with volunteer opportunities in their communities. Tyler is the chairperson of PLANewark and helped to design and build a parklet in Newark as part of his role in the organization. Park(ing) Day is “an annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into…temporary public places.” PLANewark installed the parklet on Halsey Street in Newark, a vibrant and quickly transforming commercial corridor. PLANewark is calling attention to the fact that the primary use of the public street is for parking and vehicle travel when in reality most people experience the various shops and street life on foot. The group also hopes to generate debate about street improvements, such as vegetation and seating, which the city is lacking overall.
